Marrakech: Upper House Speaker Meets US Parliamentary Delegation to OSCE PA

Speaker of the House of Advisors (upper house), Hakim Benchamach, held talks, Saturday in Marrakech, with the US parliamentary delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE PA), chaired by Roger Wicker.

This meeting, held on the occasion of the autumn session of the 18th OSCE PA, which takes place on 4-6 October in Marrakech, provided an opportunity for the two parties to reaffirm the strong and solid relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States within the framework of the strategic partnership, which encompasses the various fields of political and security as well as economic, social and cultural cooperation.

The speaker of the House of Advisors highlighted the pioneering role played by the United States in establishing international peace and security, recalling, in this regard, Morocco's strong commitment to these efforts and its active contribution to the fight against terrorism, extremism and security threats at the regional and international levels.

Benchamach also reaffirmed the United States' position in favor of the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a just and lasting solution to end the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara, calling for greater efforts and awareness of the seriousness of the security situation in the Sahelo-Saharan region in the light of the connection established between terrorist groups and separatist movements, which are the remains of the "cold war", in order to destabilize the region's security.

He also alerted the American officials to the humanitarian tragedy being experienced by the population of the Tindouf camps following the siege imposed on them, while urging US friends to exert more pressure to carry out a census of this population held in the Tindouf camps.

At the parliamentary level, Benchamach called for the creation of a Moroccan-US parliamentary forum as a mechanism for dialogue, consultation and discussion on various issues of common interest.

For his part, the head of the US parliamentary delegation said he is proud of the level of historical relations between the two countries, while lauding the multidimensional cooperation and the role played by Morocco as a strategic ally of the United States in addressing the challenges of terrorism and extremism.

In this regard, the American official praised the place and high esteem enjoyed by HM King Mohammed VI at the regional and international levels.

He also welcomed the proposal to create a parliamentary forum between the two legislative institutions, while stressing the importance of this type of mechanism in promoting and strengthening bilateral relations between the two friendly countries.
